Roy Vessil

Artist Bio

Born and raised in SoCal, Roy Cannon-Berg has received a BFA in Fine Art from Art Center College of Design, and shall receive an MFA of the same degree in the spring of 2022. A maker at heart, during online schooling he picked up an interest in video. Roy Vessil was born as a way of physically embodying the ideas inside various works it shows up in, easily reshaping to what the idea needs to be. Some say it looks like Roy Cannon-Berg and these are self-portraits, others may disagree.

Artist Statement

An interdisciplinary artist seeking to create Stories that personify, anthropomorphize, and illustrate living beings and things; traversing realms of magical realism, mythologies and folklore derived from historical, scientific, virtual, and imaginary sources. These stories of humanity and nature seek to understand the potential for symbiosis, or the complete parasitic takeover; an epistemological observation into what it means to exist inside a plane of existence that may not always make sense.

Origins for these stories can be traced back to old campfire tales, into the equivalent now being internet lore and Youtube video essays, but they act as stages and platforms for different perspectives on familiar sights. The backbone of these pieces and stories ask the question of “what if___?” and what that viewpoint could grant for familiar scenes with different characters, or obscure landscapes that investigate the same issues and morals as the original— whatever “original” may be. Each piece derives a narrative of its own that ultimately can link to one another, a rhizome anthology per se, slowly amassing and finding the nerves that connect the exquisite corpse and form the beautiful being.

Undertones of cyclopean scavenging, a love of world building, nature, and a dash of existentialism can be seen in the alchemic reactions that are the works produced.
